THE HISTORY

The Texas Open is the final PGA Tour stop before The Masters, and the last opportunity to make the field for the first and perhaps most anticipated major of the season. The tour heads to TPC San Antonio (AT&T Oaks) and offers similar conditions to Augusta – tight lies, minimal rough and fast greens – in an attempt to get the strongest possible field to come as a tune-up for Georgia.

The Valero Texas Open has thrown out a variety of winners since 2009 with many players claiming their first PGA Tour title in the process. As the third oldest tournament on the tour it was often regarded as a tournament that the game’s biggest names must play, but since the tournament moved to the week before The Masters in 2011, many of the top players choose to take the week off.

Scoring since 2009 has been varied with the winning total in single-digits on three occasions and with a tournament low around the Oaks Course of 17 under par in 2018. Furthermore, the winner has typically dominated the field, with an average winning margin of 1.5 strokes, resulting in there being just one playoff in that time.
